I've been asked more than a few times about what pieces of clothing need to be the foundation in a wardrobe. With so many styles that come and go, it's hard to know the difference between a passing fad and a timeless classic. This is why I decided to do a "wardrobe essentials" series; posts that will include explanations and images to help explain each wardrobe essential.
First up may be quite a surprise to some... just a basic t-shirt! Whether it's vintage, a graphic tee or a plain white t-shirt... any one of them will work. While the characteristics of this basic piece may change with trends, the structure is what remains classic and oh so versatile.
For example, do you remember when it used to be so cool if your basic white tee was really really tight? And now oversized boyfriend style tees are everywhere! This is because trends and fads will always come in extremes (wide leg and flares to skinnies and jeggings). Therefore pieces that are in between the two extremes (straight leg) will forever be the most versatile. And as result give you the most bang for your buck.
Spend your money on the staples, get yourself a beautifully fitting plain t-shirt that is flattering and as comfortable as can be. As you can see in the images above, you can basically pair a t-shirt with anything. It's okay to fall in love with those more extreme styles, but recognize that those are more disposable and more likely to be at the back of your closet next spring.
